A local policeman stands guard at the entrance to the government???s treasury strong room, July 13, 1947 in Peshawar, inside which are the sealed ballot boxes used during the voting on the referendum. After polling has closed in various constituencies, the boxes, one painted red for joining Hindustan and the other painted green for Pakistan, are sealed then placed in a canvas bag which also is sealed.
