AP Historical Hard Drive 2009
The now-deserted Mulberry Grove Plantation near Savannan, Ga., where Eli Whitney, a Yankee School teacher, invented the cotton gin on Oct. 8, 1940, is the site for this marker which was unveiled at a program marking the first-day sales of the Whitney one-cent stamps. Pulling the cord to unveil the marker are Miss Lucy Dodo and Lindsey P. Henderson, Jr., officials in the children of the American Revolution. Looking on is Alden H. Whitney of Washington Kisnman of the inventor. (AP Photo)
