AP Historical Hard Drive 2009
Claire Hodgson Ruth, the second wife of New York Yankees slugger Babe Ruth, spars with Artie McGovern at McGovern's Gymnasium in New York, Jan. 19, 1932. Babe Ruth had turned to McGovern after the dismal 1925 season. Gluttonous, out of shape, and in failing health, Ruth appeared to be nearing the end of his career, but McGovern imposed a rigorous training and diet regimen that restored Ruth's health. Some of the Babe's best years followed. McGovern built a clientele of athletes and celebrities at his Madison Avenue gym. (AP Photo)
