Diesel plane hops Atlantic Lying in the bay at Port Washington; L.I., July 22, 1938 was the German 19-ton flying boat Nordmeer, after her 2397-mile hop from the Azores. She started the flight from the catapult on the mother ship, the Schwadenland, at Horta, the Azores, on July 21, and arrived at Port Washington 17 hours, 42 minutes later. She is powered with four oil-burning Diesel engines and carried a crew of four. In the harbor lay another German catapult ship, the Friesenland, which was to start the Nordmeer on her return hop in a few days. (AP Photo)
