Pope John XXIII blesses spectators as he rides portable throne to St. Paul's Basilica, outside Vatican walls, which he visited Jan. 25, 1959 in Rome. At a private meeting in the monastery of the Basilica, the pontiff announced the calling of a new Ecumenical Council of the Roman Catholic Church and implied that other separate Christian churches of the world might be invited to participate. The council, suspended in 1870 when Italian troops occupied Rome, deals with most important questions of faith and dogma of Roman Catholic church. (AP Photo)
