To overcome the present shortage of small denominations, a large department store in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, issued its own currency in the form of vouchers redeamable either in goods or money within four weeks, June 20, 1948, to customers standing at the cash register. The new Deutsche (German) Mark was introduced midnight of June 18th and is valid since June 19th, 1948, replacing the old Reichsmark. (AP Photo)
