As the year 1936 closed the Chinese government announced a nationwide cleanup on drug addicts, drug merchants and manufacturers of narcotic drugs would be launched with the coming of 1937. The penalty for folk falling into any of these classifications being death by shooting. As the year closed drug addicts in all parts of China were rushing to government anti-drug hospitals seeking last minute treatment to escape the threatened executions. This photo was taken in December 30, 1936, where strong anti-drug measures were expected to be launched with the opening of the new year.
