"Can we not afford to take care of 60- to 65,000 people who are unable to take care of themselves? What kind of society are we?" shouts House Speaker Billy McCoy, D-Rienzi, to the applause of Medicaid recipients, retirees, health advocates and some lawmakers in the Capitol rotunda, Wednesday, May 26, 2004, in Jackson, Miss. McCoy along with several other lawmakers had voted earlier this year for a bill that removes 65,000 people from Medicaid, as part of a cost saving measure. Many of the people removed are eligible for the federal Medicare program. However, some House members say the Medicaid changes will cause widespread suffering or even death. Gov. Haley Barbour signed the Medicaid bill Wednesday, but some House members are now calling on the governor to add the issue to the current call of the Special Session of the Legislature.
