British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, crossed the Channel in the British destroyer Kelvin to visit the Normandy landing beaches. The Prime Minister stood on the bridge of the destroyer while she was bombarding enemy positions on the French coast from close range. He was greeted by General Montgomery and received a great welcome from troops unloading stores on the beach. For 7 hours he remained in France, driving inland in a jeep towards the battle zone and paying visits to different Allied units throughout his trip. The Prime Minister lights a cigar as he and General Montgomery set out in a jeep to go inland, in Normandy, France, on June 12, 1944. (AP Photo)
