Afghanistan, Nimroz, Zaranj, 05 August 2017 In the back of a pick-up truck driven by a smuggler, or rabalat (guide), about a dozen Afghans, as well as the same amount again in the cabin, begin the second leg of their journey (the first being from their home provinces to Zaranj) as undocumented migrants, from the southern outskirts of Zaranj to their next destination, the border with Pakistan, where they'll be collected by another smuggler for the next leg, to Iran. The migrants aboard trucks like this one were predominantly from Afghan provinces further north like Herat, Kunduz, Mazar-i Sharif and Baghlan, while others were coming from neighbouring and embattled Helmand. The journey from Zarang to the Pakistani border takes approximately 6 hours. The majority is through harsh desert with no roads. Two smugglers I spoke to said they paid three bribes to pass checkpoints along the way: one to the Afghan national Police - 500 Afghani (approx. USD7.00), one to the Taliban - also 500 Afghani and another to the Afghan Border Police - 2,000 Afghani (approx. USD28.00). Les migrants que l'on retrouve sur cette route sont majoritairement originaires des provinces du nord de Herat, Kunduz, Mazar-i Sharif et Baghlan. D'autres viennent de la region de Zarandj. Le voyage pour la fronticre dure approximativement 6 heures, sur des pistes desertiques sans routes.
