In the picture Erbil main square where families and young people gather at sunset to recover from the heat of the day. In the background Erbil citadel, recognized from UNESCO as the oldest constantly inhabited settlement in the world. There is another Iraq, far away from war and destruction, a place where different religions and ancient populations coexist in peace side by side. The Northern part of the country, where the Kurds live, is a safe, stable, autonomous region in a war torn area. Life flows smoothly there and people are proud of their heritage. Kurdistan has its own capital, Erbil, the population is estimated about 8.3 million people and it adjoins with Turkey (North) and Iran (East). It has its own Government, the KRG (Kurdish Regional Government), its parliament, prime minister flag, anthem and army. With the new Iraqi constitution in 2005 and after a long struggle dating back to the 70's finally the dream of a free, self administrated and independent Kurdistan has become true. Even though they are still part of Iraq, de facto, the region is another country.
