Icons grace a chapel wall at Kovilje monastery. Founded in the 12th century and dedicated to the Archangel Gabriel, with later additions dedicated to St. Nicholas, the isolated Serbian Orthodox monastery of Kovilje is home to currently nine women. Recruits ("Novices") to monastery life - throughout the Balkans - have dropped significantly in recent years. Reasons, say those in robes, stem from today's fast-past world and desire among youth for a more "open" and "mobile" lifestyle.
