An abandoned kindergarten with cherry blossoms reflection in Goto (Islands). Goto is a group of border islands off the western coast of Japan, located in?the East China Sea. The roots of Christianity in Japan, once banned in the country, can be found in the Goto Islands. Now the islands are facing drastic depopulation. To revive the life, the authority is looking for more tourists from both Japan and foreign countries. It might be achieved somehow soon, since Goto's historical churches could become part of UNESCO'S World Heritage Sites as early as mid-2018. At the same time, some worry about a radical increase of tourists from neighboring countries (as there are some existing tensions between them) that could easily override Goto's population in terms of the number and endanger their security. In fact, nearby Tsushima Island faces this issue, as well as having to deal with illegal fishing.
