The V&A’s Royal Photographic Society Collection © Victoria and Albert Museum, London A photograph titled 'Machine Reaping in Sussex', taken by Colonel Joseph Gale (c 1835-1906) in 1887. A farm worker ties bundles of wheat newly reaped by his colleague operating the harvester, which is pulled by two horses. A couple of children, to the right of the photograph, sit playing. This photograph was exhibited at the Photographic Society of Great Britain in 1887. Joseph Gale specialised in naturalistic photographs of rural life and figures in landscapes. He was one of the first members of the Linked Ring Brotherhood and was also a member of the Royal Photographic Society.
