The V&A’s Royal Photographic Society Collection © Victoria and Albert Museum, London A photograph of three country folk gathered at the edge of a path next to a wooden hut, taken by Colonel Joseph Gale (c 1835-1906) in about 1890. Two men tie bundles of twigs together as a woman appears to bring them a jug of refreshments. Joseph Gale specialised in naturalistic photographs of rural life and figures in landscapes. He was one of the first members of the Linked Ring Brotherhood and was also a member of the Royal Photographic Society.
