The V&A’s Royal Photographic Society Collection © Victoria and Albert Museum, London Print by Scottish electrical engineer Alan Archibald Campbell Swinton (1863-1930). In 1896 Swinton opened the first radiographic laboratory in Britain and in 1908 published his ideas on an electrical system for television. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1915, and also served on its council.
