Fighters with the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia (TGF) organize their weapons after being fired upon by al Shabab Islamists on the cities eastern front line, Aug. 30, 2009 in Mogadishu. The Shabab used to be considered genuine freedom fighters, the ones seen as leading the battle against the thousands of Ethiopian troops inside Somalia, propping up the previous transitional government. But now that the Ethiopians have left, the Shabab seem to be going through an ideological drift. Their emphasis is not so much about liberating Somalia any more, the defectors said, but about global jihad. (Jehad Nga/The New York Times) 14072702
