(NYT7) PANAMA CITY, Panama -- May 5, 2007 -- TOXIC-SYRUP-5 -- Ernest Osorio in Panama City in December 2006. Poison cough syrup from China hospitalized Osorio in Panama last year and partly paralyzed his face. Diethylene glycol is an industrial solvent and prime ingredient in antifreeze. It is also a killer. And over the years, it has been loaded into all varieties of medicine -- cough syrup, fever medication, injectable drugs -- by counterfeiters who profit by substituting the sweet-tasting solvent for a safe, more expensive syrup, usually glycerin, commonly used in drugs, food, toothpaste and other household products.
