*FILE PHOTO*(NYT6) PANAMA CITY, Panama -- May 5, 2007 -- TOXIC-SYRUP-4 -- Dr. Nestor Sosa at a hospital n Panama City, Panama in December 2006. Sosa helped find the cause of at least 100 deaths in Panama last year: poisonous diethylene glycol rather than glycerin was mixed into cough syrup. Diethylene glycol is an industrial solvent and prime ingredient in antifreeze. It is also a killer. And over the years, it has been loaded into all varieties of medicine -- cough syrup, fever medication, injectable drugs -- by counterfeiters who profit by substituting the sweet-tasting solvent for a safe, more expensive syrup, usually glycerin, commonly used in drugs, food, toothpaste and other household products.
