Alexandra Elman heads to see a client for a wine tasting, in New York, April 29, 2009. Even before losing her sight in 1995 because of diabetes, Alexandra Elman, 40, had a sophisticated palate. She has worked in the wine world since college, and now crisscrosses the globe to select wines for restaurants and shops including Cru, the New York Athletic Club and Pure Food and Wine. Divorced, she is dating a man in Florida and lives alone on New York's Upper East Side. Despite her blindness, Elman skis, swims, goes climbing, bicycles (on a tandem) and flies planes (with a co-pilot). (Todd Heisler/The New York Times)
