FILE -- (NYT15) NEW YORK -- Aug. 17, 2007 -- OBIT-ROACH -- Max Roach at the Bell Atlantic Jazz Festival at Columbia University in New York, in 2000. Roach, a founder of modern jazz who rewrote the rules of drumming in the 1940's and spent the rest of his career breaking musical barriers and defying listeners' expectations, died early Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007, in Manhattan.
