(NYT31) PHILADELPHIA -- May 10, 2007 -- PRISONS-TOURISTS-5 -- Willie L. Smith, 80, who was incarcerated at Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, Pa., beginning in 1947, for 20 years, seen on the baseball field of the exercise yard at Eastern State, April 6, 2007. The experiences of two former inmates, including Smith, suggest that even in the middle of the 20th century, life behind the walls of Eastern State was a mixture of the macabre and mundane. For centuries, inmates have tried their best to escape the confines of prisons. Now, thousands of tourists are paying their way to get in. Former prisons around the country -- from the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia to the Crime and Punishment Museum in Ashburn. Ga. -- have found a second life as somewhat unlikely tourist destinations. (Tim Shaffer/The New York Times)
