(NYT64) ABINGDON, Va. -- July 30, 2007 -- OXYCONTIN-HEARINGS -- Howard R. Udell, left, Purdue Pharma's top lawyer; Dr. Paul Goldenheim, the former medical director; and Michael Friedman, the chief executive, outside the Western District of Virginia Federal Courthouse in Abingdon, Va., on Thursday, May 10, 2007. Federal prosecutors may have differed with their superiors at the Justice Department over how aggressively to pursue fraud charges against the maker of the narcotic painkiller OxyContin, two lawyers who were briefed about the case say. Those lawyers, who asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the case, said that higher-ups within the Justice Department appeared initially to favor a less aggressive approach to the case against OxyContin's producer, Purdue Pharma of Stamford, Conn.
