(NYT37) HAVANA, Cuba -- July 29, 2007 -- CUBA-OBESE-DANCERS -- Juan Miguel Mas, above, a 300-pound choreographer, formed the Danza Voluminosa troupe in 1996; its dancers are heavy, but light on their feet as seen in this performance in Havana, Cuba on Saturday, July 28, 2007. A troupe of obese dancers have become a cultural phenomenon in Cuba, breaking the traditional stereotypes of dance, redefining the aesthetics of beauty and, along the way, raising the self esteem of people with weight problems. The troupe's popularity comes as a surprise in a country known for its muscular, lean dancers in every genre from classical ballet to salsa. (Jose Goitia/The New York Times)
