(NYT60) MINNEAPOLIS -- Jan. 11, 2008 -- INVEST-MUTUALS-ADV13-3 -- Matthew B. Paschke of Grizzly Short uses a "vulnerability index" to help pick stocks in Minneapolis in January 2008. In the fourth quarter, the market was dogged by recession worries and big losses on subprime mortgages and related securities at several leading investment banks. On top of that, the price of oil flirted with $100 a barrel. Three mutual funds that thrived amid the tumult of fourth quarter '07 all stressed diversification more than the average fund does, and they used uncommon strategies or stretched beyond their original mandate.
