(NYT25) LAUREL, Md. -- Dec. 22, 2007 -- THISLAND-HIGHWAY-2 -- A view of the Laurel Shopping Center in Laurel, Md., in December 2007. The center opened to fanfare on Route 1 in 1956, but earned new attention in 1972. U.S. Route 1 stretches 2,000 miles from Maine to Florida. For much of the way it is distinctive for its lack of distinction. But amid the fast-food chains, discount stores and parking lots of its strip malls lies the occasional exception.
