*FILE PHOTO*(NYT11) LITTLE FALLS, N.Y. -- Dec. 8, 2007 -- CLINTON-PERSONA -- Hillary Rodham Clinton, (D-N.Y.) campaigning in Little Falls, N.Y., in 2000. After years of being buffeted as a first lady, Clinton found solace (and more buffeting) in a run for the Senate. Clinton's friends lament that the engaging, generous woman they know would seem alien to many Americans, who perceive her as overly scripted and controlled. Aides often describe her as "the most famous person nobody knows," a conceit that both condemns those who have mischaracterized Clinton and acknowledges how inscrutable she can be. Clinton faces an unusual challenge in her quest for the presidency. After a political lifetime of public battles, suspicions and humiliations, she most prove she is not too hardened to inspire, or too wary to truly lead. (Chang W. Lee/The New York Times)
