NEW YORK -- July 5, 2001 -- JAMAIC BAY AERIAL -- An aerial view of the eroding Jamaica Bay marshland which has beaches and a wildlife refuge and borders both Brooklyn and Queens. Jamaica Bay's marshland, a crucial 3,400-acre wildlife habitat perhaps unique in size within a major city, is shrinking fast, and no one knows why. Rising sea level doesn't explain why the problem is worse there than elsewhere. Scientists give the wetlands only 20 more years if the rate of erosion is not reduced.
