President Abraham Lincoln visits Gen. George B. McClellan and his staff near Sharpsburg, MD., on Oct. 3, 1862. The visit was a few weeks after the strategically important Battle of Antietam. Lincoln met with McClellan to try to persuade him to attack Gen. Robert E. Lee's army. McClellan declined and days later was dismissed as commander of the Army of the Potomac.
