(NYT14) UNDATED -- Jan. 16, 2001 -- ROOSEVELT-MEDAL -- Lt. Col. Theodore Roosevelt during his days as a Rough Rider in 1898. President Clinton awarded Roosevelt a posthumous Medal of Honor on Tuesday for leading soldiers in his Rough Riders cavalry regiment in a famous charge up San Juan Hill in Cuba on July 1, 1898 during the Spanish American War. The charge, in which Roosevelt was accompanied by only four or five others, was a pivotal event in the war. (Library of Congress/The New York Times)
