(NYT31) SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- May 26, 2006 -- SAT-PREP-ADV28 -- Patricia Walpole, a seventh grader who took the Preliminary SAT, on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 in Spartanburg, S.C. And the test prep business is growing, according to Kaplan and the Princeton Review, the two biggest SAT test preparation companies. On Saturday, June 3, a half-million students will sit down to take the SAT, a test that -- along with high school transcripts, personal essays and recommendations -- can help determine where they spend their college years. About 2.2 million SAT tests are taken annually; about half the students take the test more than once in their high school years. The other main college entrance exam, the ACT, has been gaining popularity. The ACT has traditionally been regarded as a test that does not warrant as much special preparation by students, because its content is closer to a standard high school curriculum.
