(NYT40) NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Sept. 18, 2005 -- KATRINA-NEIGHBORHOOD-40 -- A statue of he Virgin Mary stands partially submerged outside a house in the Gentilly section of New Orleans on Sunday, Sept. 18, 2005. While much of the city is drying out and making halting steps toward recovery, this mostly middle-class neighborhood's topography and proximity to a breach in the London Avenue Canal has given it the distinction of being the largest remaining swath of the city still under water.
