(NYT41) HOUSTON, Texas -- Sept. 22, 2005 -- HURRICANE-RITA-9 -- Lines for security screening were short and lines at the check-in counter were long as travelers arrived as much as a day early for flights leaving Houston Airport in Houston, Texas, on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005. Hurricane Rita lost some of its punch Thursday, slipping back to Category 4 strength as it continued its westward trek across the Gulf of Mexico, but government meteorologists warned in a statement that it "remains an extremely dangerous hurricane."
