(NYT19) OSAKA, Japan -- Feb. 18, 2005 -- SINGING-SAMURAI -- Ken Matsudaira, 51, performing in his revuelike show, "Matsuken Samba II," in Osaka, Japan, in Feb. 2005. For 25 years on Japanese television, Matsudaira played an 18th century samurai who embodied Japan's idealized masculinity. So closely identified had Matsudaira become with this pop culture icon that it came as a shock when the Japanese woke up recently and found that the actor, for the last decade and hidden mostly out of sight, had been dancing the samba on stage in glittering gold and purple kimonos (Masafumi Yamamoto/The New York Times) *LITE
