(NYT12) ATLANTA, GA -- February 18, 2005 -- Adv. for Sunday, Feb. 20 -- MANFACTURERS-WALMART -- Toro mowers at a Home Depot in Atlanta, GA on Feb. 9, 2005. Toro found a way to sell products to big-box retailers without alienating its own dealers. It used to be so simple. Big manufacturers with powerful brands called the shots in the marketplace, and retailers played along. Then came the rise of Wal-Mart and other big-box retailers, which turned the power relationship on its head. Suddenly, manufacturers had to play by the retailers' rules.
