(NYT49) HALABJA, Iraq -- Feb. 17, 2005 -- IRAQ-KURDS-4 -- Iraqi Kurdish militiamen, knows as pesh merga, drill at a camp outside Halabja, northern Iraq, on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005. Emboldened by election results that give the long-oppressed Kurds more influence than they have ever wielded in modern Iraq, Kurdish leaders are demanding expanded territory and powers that will let them continue running their region as a mostly independent state, despite a push by the Arabs for a strong central government.
