(NYT58) NEW YORK -- March 18, 2005 -- MUSLIM-WOMEN -- A Muslim mixed gender prayer led by Dr. Amina Wadud, prof of Islamic Studies, from Virginia University was held at the Synod Housein Manhattan on Friday, March 18, 2005 where women and men sat together although separated; women on the left side of the room, men on the right, with occassional couples in the middle. A mix of reactions, from discomfort to elation, colored the mood at the controversial service, which was organized by a group of Muslim activists who hope to elevate the status of women in Islam.
