(NYT35) NEW YORK -- May 8, 2005 -- BELLEVUE-CHAPLAIN-INTERNS -- The Rev. Jacklyn-Anthony Einstein Viel, center, leading a prayer for a patient at Bellevue Hospital Center in Manhattan, April 12, 2005. Hands-on education for student chaplains started at Bellevue in 1940 and was supported until 1999. It began again in January 2005, with the support of a Lutheran organization and the city's Health and Hospitals Corporation. With prayer or the patience of a good listener, student chaplains spend 15 minutes or more with people clinging to life, battling illness, crying or just staring blankly out the windows, on the psychiatric floor, the intensive care section, the prison ward and other units.
