(NYT16) PECONIC, N.Y. -- April 5, 2005 -- LONG-ISLAND-REDS-2 -- Eric Fry, the winemaker at Lenz Winery in Peconic, N.Y., in March, said growing conditions on Long Island are similar to Bordeaux's. For the grape growers and winemakers who are trying to make a name for Long Island's wines, the drab landscape is the least of their worries. Their region has yet to make a name for itself with much of the public, and they have been hard-pressed to extend their market beyond New York City. But where others see problems, they see nothing but potential. After 30 years of fits and starts and several false stabs at carving out an identity for Long Island wines, they may finally be in position to climb that mountain. (Tony Cenicola/The New York Times)
