(NYT41) SAIPAN, Northern Marianas Islands -- June 15, 2004 -- SAIPAN-REMEMBER-3 -- On Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at Saipan in the Northern Marianas Islands, General Paul W. Tibbets, center, a pilot of the Enola Gay is welcome by Saipan resident, Camille Pangelinan, 42, whose brother and son are serving military. After a week of Atlantic D-Day television specials culminating with the June 6 gathering of heads of government in Normandy, many Saipan veterans and their supporters gathered in Saipan in the Northern Marianas Islands on Tuesday. Many said that, just as in World War II, the American popular mind relegates the Pacific theater to second-class status. (Jae-Hyun Seok/The New York Times)
