(NYT61) MICHOACAN, Mexico -- June 1, 2004 -- LOGGERS-BUTTERFLIES -- Marcelino Martinez, 75, left, and his neighbors have joined forces to protect their forest in Michoacan, Mexico against illegal logging on May 20, 2004. The Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve is Mexico's most famous national park, a 10,000-year-old evergreen forest set aside by presidential decree and supported by millions of dollars in international aid for colonies of orange and gold butterflies that migrate annually from the United States and Canada. But when the butterflies leave each spring, this reserve becomes a symbol of the rapid destruction of all the nation's forests, and is overtaken by organized crime and mob justice.
