(NYT16) UNDATED -- May 25, 2004 -- ST-FLORIAN-MEMORIAL -- A recent but undated portrait of Friedrich St. Florian, the designer of the new World War II memorial in Washington, D.C.St. Florian is an Austrian-American who grew up in Nazi-occupied Vienna. His design won a competition unanimously, yet some have criticized it for looking too "imperial,'' perhaps influenced by his childhood. He teaches at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence.
