(NYT41) NETTUNO, Italy -- May 17, 2004 -- ITALY-CEMETERY -- Angelo Perna, the chief gardener at the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery and Memorial in Nettuno, Italy on May 10, 2004. More than seven thousand Americans who died in Italy in World War II are buried in this cemetery an hour from Rome. Despite criticism of the United States role in Iraq that can be heard in Italy, the gratitude felt for Americans is palpable here. (Riccardo Squillantini/The New York Times)
