(NYT37) VINCI, Italy -- July 1, 2004 -- LEONARDO-CAR -- "The Automobile" by Leonardo Da Vinci at the Leonardo museum in Vinci, Italy in June. In museums in Vinci and in Florence, Italian scientists have unveiled what they consider to be the first definitive version of a vehicle designed by da Vinci, more than 500 years ago, at a time when rapid transit came largely from horses. Yet, though conceived in 1478, centuries before the Model T Ford introduced mass production, it seems a matter of debate whether Leonardo ever built one. (Sandro Michahelles/The New York Times)
