(NYT30) NAIROBI, Kenya -- June 7, 2004 -- GENITAL-CUTTING-1 -- Isnino Shuriye, a former genital cutter from Kenya, foreground, and Mariam Bagayoko, from Mali, also a former genital cutter, outside the site of an international meeting advocating an end to the mutilation, in Nairobi, June 7, 2004 . Genital cutting of women in Africa is slowly losing favor. Parliaments are passing laws forbidding the practice, which causes widespread death and disfigurement. Women who have been carrying out the cutting, and who have been revered by their communities for doing so, are beginning to lay down their knives. (Guillaume Bonn/The New York Times)
