(NYT33) ELMONT, N.Y. -- June 5, 2004 -- RAC-TRACK-WORKERS -- Marcos Velasco, left, and Narciso Servin, were among the backstretch workers relaxing at the recreation center at Belmont Park on Thursday, June 3, 2004. They work as grooms. The spring soccer games have become a popular place for those who work in the backstretch. The soccer games are among several activities available to the estimated 2,000 workers, part of an effort by the New York Racing Association and the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association to improve life on the backstretch.
