(NYT49) CHARLESTOWN, W. Va. -- May 19, 2004 -- ADAMS-PEONIES-2 -- One of historian William Howard Adams's 35 tree peonies, which have blossomed this year with a flourish after a cool, rainy spring in Charlestown, W. Va., on May 12, 2004. Adams was inspired to collect peonies, he wrote, "when I visited the Summer Palace in Beijing years ago, where I saw how the last empress had arranged them against a great boulder which had been specially brought to the garden for background.''
