(NYT28) ZAUCHWITZ, Germany -- May 18, 2004 -- GERMANY-ASPARAGUS-3 -- A harvest handful of asparagus at the Syring farm in Zauchwitz, Germany in May. On weekend mornings at this time of year, the traffic backs up alarmingly at the Beelitz exit on the Berlin-Leipzig autobahn. For about two months -- from late April until June 24, the feast of St. John the Baptist -- Berliners go bonkers over asparagus, especially the white asparagus grown in the sandy soil in Beelitz, Germany. They call the annual season of madness spargelzeit, or asparagus time. (Otto Pohl/The New York Times)
