(NYT19) MONTEREY, Calif. -- May 6, 2004 -- CARS-DRIFTING -- Kenjiro Gushi, center, is toasted by Tanner Foust, left, and Rhys Millen at the $10,000 International Drifting Shoot Out, at Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, Calif., on May 1, 2004. In the last few years, one of the hottest new motor sports has become an odd activity called drifting. Started in Japan in the mid-1960s, today's version of the sport involves drivers intentionally putting their cars into a controlled slide (or drift) at high speed through a marked course.
