(NYT60) DAVIS, Calif. -- May 19, 2004 -- FARMS-BIOTECH -- Kent Bradford, Director of Seed Biotechnology Center at the University of California at Davis, left, looks over genetically engineered plants on May 18, 2004, with David Tricoli, Manager of the Plant Transformation Facility at UC Davis. Tricoli used genetic engineering to create a virus-resistant melon, something that conventional plant breeders had been unable to develop. But the company, Seminis, dropped the melon project and most of its other work on biotech vegetables because of the high costs of obtaining regulatory approval and perceived consumer resistance.
